Guitar Accessories Every Guitarist Should Have

1/ Guitar Case

The case is an essential item for taking care of our guitar. Although there are hard cases to protect the guitar from any impact, the most economical and comfortable option is to use a gig bag, which you can carry both on your shoulder and on your back.

The price varies mainly depending on the thickness of the padding (5mm, 10mm, 15mm…). Here is our selection of hard guitar cases!

2/ Electronic Tuner

It is often said ironically that “the guitarist spends half a concert tuning and the other half playing out of tune”. The guitar is a very sensitive instrument that is affected, for example, by any change in temperature, leading to it going out of tune. And there’s nothing worse than hearing an out-of-tune guitar…

Until recently, it was always tuned by ear. To do this, a note is taken as a reference (generally the “A”, which provides a reference pitch) and, from there, the rest of the strings are tuned. But with the advent of electronic tuners and their low price, almost everyone owns one today, which makes the task much easier. Moreover, when playing in public, it’s best to use these kinds of devices, as you avoid wasting time and annoying your audience…

There are different types of tuners, even in phone applications. But the most accurate are the “clip-on” ones, which are usually placed on the tuning peg and tune precisely by using the guitar’s vibration, avoiding interference from any external noise.

3/ Guitar Stand

If you play the guitar often, you might find it uncomfortable to take it out of its case every time.

That’s why it’s essential to always have your guitar within reach, and for that, you need a good guitar stand. There are different types of stands: for electric (thinner), for classical and acoustic (thicker), tripod-shaped or with only two V-shaped arms…

I recommend buying a wall mount, because in addition to being very comfortable, it will serve as decoration to showcase your guitars.

4/ Picks

Unless you only play classical guitar or fingerstyle, you will use guitar picks. There are an infinite number of types, thicknesses, and materials. Our advice is to try to find the one that best suits your playing style.

If you’ve just started playing guitar, it’s recommended to buy a soft, a medium, and a hard one, and try them all. Generally speaking, I can tell you that soft ones are more recommended for strumming and hard ones for lead playing, as you have more control and precision. But as I said, it’s very subjective.

On the other hand, as a good guitarist, you’re used to seeing your picks mysteriously disappear. Did you know that there are picks you can stick on your guitar or even on a microphone stand? If you don’t have one yet, I think you should get one if you want to save on buying picks…

Here is our selection of guitar picks or plectrums!

5/ Guitar Strap

You play the guitar sitting down, but what about when you have to play standing up? Having a good, comfortable guitar strap will ensure a good performance.

6/ Capo

The capo is a device that allows the guitarist to raise the pitch register. It will help even the most novice guitarist play their favorite songs using basic open chords. But the capo is also used by professionals, especially when accompanying a singer and you want to raise or lower the key of the song in question.

In the past, they were made of wood and attached to the neck with a braided gut cord, but today, there is a variety with modern and sophisticated designs.

It’s important to know that capos are different if they are for classical guitar or for acoustic and electric guitar. Here I leave you with two successful models, one economical and the other more professional.

7/ Stool

Achieving a correct posture while playing the guitar should be a priority for any guitarist. Remember that your body is your main instrument and it is essential that you take care of it.

There are different gadgets that allow us to achieve this healthy position and play more easily and comfortably. The most common are the bench or footrest, the Gitano or Ergoplay.

8/ Music Stand

The music stand is a basic tool for any self-respecting musician. The music stand will allow you to place sheet music and even some books (if the stand is more robust), so you can play the guitar in silence and maintain a good posture. You know that if you place scores anywhere, the usual thing is to bend over and then you have back problems…

There are mainly two types of music stands: foldable and fixed. If your intention is to have it in your study area, the best would be to have a fixed one, which is more robust. But for playing outdoors and transporting it from one place to another, you will need a foldable one.

9/ Metronome

A metronome is a device that indicates the tempo or beat of musical compositions. It regularly produces a visual and/or acoustic signal, which allows a musician to maintain a constant pulse when playing a piece of music.

If you want to improve as a musician, the metronome is an essential tool and, nowadays, you have very precise digital and analog metronomes.

10/ Basic Cleaning Kit

The time to change strings is usually the ideal opportunity to do a complete cleaning of the guitar. Anyway, after playing the guitar, it is practical to clean it.
