Aside from an imposing strap width, a heavy bass guitar needs excellent padding. Today, a bass strap comes in several models depending on the type of materials. There are models of padded straps at the shoulder. This effectively serves to significantly reduce the very heavy weight. Other models are adorned with neoprene or foam padding. The most modern ones feature air cushion padding.

Furthermore, more adherent strap models are also to be preferred, preventing the bassist from experiencing Neck Dive or other lumbar and/or neck problems. These are straps with an anti-slip layer on one or all of the internal parts of the strap. This type of strap is often found on suede leather models. The same applies to polypropylene models.

A bass guitar strap must imperatively be balanced on the shoulder. This ensures a stable playing position and accurate musical notes.

If you have a higher budget, a leather strap is the absolute best. It is an extremely resistant material. It comes in different types such as cowhide, camel skin, etc. Choose the leather model that has a rough surface. It adapts perfectly to your shoulder, even for rockers who love to go shirtless. And it combines comfort with versatility.

The right fastening system to favor

We always refer to the attachment method and the security of your guitar. Over time and with wear, the bass strap can suddenly detach in the middle of a concert. This can cause discomfort and, above all, accidents leading to the deterioration of your bass guitar. Strap models with a locking system are highly sought after in this case.

Some manufacturers have developed secure systems like Straplocks. This is a strap lock equipped with a safety catch that clips to secure the strap to the bass guitar. It’s a very effective and safe solution. However, it might not appeal to everyone. It requires completely changing the attachment system on your electric bass. Sometimes, it’s imperative to call in professionals to change it, which incurs an additional expense.

Other alternatives also exist, such as Strap Blocks. These are simply rubber rings to be attached at the strap’s fastening points. These will certainly secure the strap.

Why is it important to have a more aesthetic strap?

From a simple cotton strap to leather models, the choice is much wider when it comes to aesthetics. The bassist can therefore choose the look of the strap according to their needs. They can use a strap that matches the rest of their outfit. A hard-rocker is more likely to choose a strap printed with a mystical pattern. Leather straps can be decorated with eyelets. Some prefer vintage models with floral, Aztec, or many other styles.

In fact, the look of the strap has an almost infinite variation. It should, in some way, respect the artist’s musical style. However, this doesn’t prevent some from opting for slightly unconventional or extravagant styles.
