How to Choose a Ukulele Strap

How to choose the right strap for your ukulele

The ukulele is a small plucked string instrument, measuring between 35.5 cm and 45.5 cm or more, often played standing up. For a good playing position, it is necessary to use a strap specifically designed for this instrument. Excellent models abound on the market, and they are not entirely different from guitar straps. So, you need to make your choice carefully by analyzing certain parameters such as size, fastening method, style, material type, and comfort of use.

Choosing the right strap size

One of the primary criteria for your ukulele strap is to have a shoulder strap suitable for your build.

In principle, the ukulele is an instrument played in a horizontal position. It is preferable that the strap does not obstruct the view of your audience. Its small size and minimal weight therefore require a fairly thin strap. This already adds a bit of style to players. A strap less than 5 cm wide is therefore ideal.

For the length of your strap, opt for adjustable strap models. A variety of adjustable straps exist online. Some are equipped with plastic or metal buckles that are easy to adjust. Please choose the length according to your height and playing style. If necessary, measure the distance from your neck, passing over your shoulder, to the two ends of your ukulele’s strap buttons.

What is the best fastening method to choose?

Some ukulele models have pre-installed strap buttons to prevent accidental falls. Others lack a strap attachment system.

For models equipped with strap buttons, choose a strap that is easy to clip on. Leather or suede models sometimes have fastening holes. To do this, you must push each end onto each strap button. Know that this model is very reliable and secure. Furthermore, there are also straps with strings to tie onto your ukulele. These are very affordable models but less effective.

For models without strap buttons, an alternative to classic straps is the drill-free shoulder strap. These models have a hook, often plastic. You must attach them to the soundhole of your ukulele. Then, loop the strap cord under your ukulele. The other end of the strap can be placed around the player’s neck like a necklace. It is advisable to choose an adjustable cord beforehand for permanent playing comfort.

Other alternatives for ukuleles without buttons are adhesive patches. This is the case with LoopSystems. It is therefore necessary to add metal buttons to both ends of the ukulele to stick onto the instrument. This facilitates the attachment of a standard strap. However, care must be taken not to use this method on premium quality ukulele models.

Choosing strap materials

A ukulele is lighter than an electric bass or a Solidbody guitar. You can therefore opt for various types of fabric for the strap. This accessory exists in different models on the market: leather strap, polypropylene, cotton, suede, etc.

You just need to choose them according to your taste and use:

  • For ukuleles to be used in concert, prefer more adherent straps with rough and non-slip surfaces. With a performance duration of one to two hours, appropriate models are preferably leather or cotton straps. Sweat is unlikely to bother you during your performance. You should still consider a well-padded strap to relieve pressure on the shoulder and/or neck. There are models of straps equipped with neoprene foam or other materials for this purpose.
  • For domestic or occasional use, all types of fabrics can be used. Simply choose more resistant models with good stitching finish. More robust straps can last exactly over time. But, that doesn’t stop you from choosing a strap with fur or foam padding as well.

Stylish and trendy strap models

Beyond wearing comfort, a ukulele strap must also meet certain aesthetic criteria. Unicolored, multicolored, printed, or perforated,… various strap styles can distinguish one player from another.

You can perfectly match them to your music style: country, jazz, funk, etc. You are quite free to choose the strap that suits your preference. Just know that the ukulele strap market offers a wide choice of casual, vintage, vulgar, personalized looks, and so on.

After completing these few steps, recheck the essentials before proceeding with the acquisition of your ukulele strap, including wearing comfort. Every detail matters immensely to avoid disappointment. Then, proceed to properly mount the strap on your ukulele.

How to properly attach the ukulele strap?

To properly mount the ukulele strap, follow these steps to be able to play quickly.

  • Detecting the strap’s location: for both ukulele scenarios, with or without drilling, you must always correctly locate the position of the fastening buttons or the soundhole/rosette. One button should always be located behind the soundbox. And the other end is often without a button. It is advisable to add one at the neck.
  • Attaching the strap: clip the strap to the first end. Check that it is well in place and securely fastened. This ensures the safety of your instrument. Then tie the string at the neck or lock it onto a pre-installed button.
  • Adjusting the length: this is a crucial point for playing comfort and strumming the strings throughout the concert. Repeat the adjustment until you feel most comfortable.
