How to choose a bass guitar strap correctly?

Choosing the Right Bass Strap

For a comfortable playing experience, a bassist equipped with an electric bass and a well-fitted bass strap is better prepared. Whether sitting or standing, it is the essential accessory for great professional artists or amateur bassists.

But a bass strap is not just a simple guitar strap for these lovers of deep sound. It is also a fashion accessory to enhance your bass, your outfit, and, of course, your show.

Among countless strap models offered on the market, it is necessary to make the right choice for more comfortable and stylish use.

What are the ideal dimensions for your bass strap?

What are the ideal dimensions for your bass strap?

Regarding its length, there is a wide variety of bass strap sizes on the market. Some models are available in Small, Medium, Large sizes, and others in a larger format from XL and up. What’s important for the length is that the strap fits your stature and your needs. It is therefore advisable to choose the right size between 80 cm and 198 cm. Start by measuring from the buttons of your bass to your neck.

But for more versatility, you should opt for an adjustable strap. It’s enough to increase or decrease the size at the bridge. This is indeed the best choice to avoid having to invest in different sizes depending on your playing style.

As for width, a bass guitar strap should instinctively have a wide strip. A large range is found on the market: from thinner models of 1 cm up to a width of about 9 cm. But the most suitable is the one that offers carrying comfort to the bassist. A wide strap distributes a good balance on the shoulder. This will save you from potential back pain, skin problems, and fatigue after each concert. Keep in mind that a bassist on a regional or worldwide tour always has to carry an average 4 kg bass guitar on their shoulders for about two hours.

How to avoid quick fatigue with an electric bass?

In addition to an impressive strap width, a heavy bass requires excellent padding. Today, bass straps are available in various models depending on the material type. There are models with shoulder padding. This actually serves to significantly reduce the very heavy weight. Other models are adorned with neoprene or foam padding. The most modern ones have padding in the form of an air cushion.

Furthermore, models with a grippier strap are to be preferred to spare the bassist from neck dive or other back and/or neck problems. This refers to a strap with a non-slip layer on one or the entire inner part of the strap. This type of strap is often found on suede models. The same applies to polypropylene models.

Choosing the material for a well-gripping strap

A bass guitar strap must absolutely be balanced on the shoulder. This ensures a stable playing position and correct pitch of the musical notes.

With a wide range of bass straps, some brands offer a cotton strap. This is a very comfortable material that absorbs moisture and thus sweat. In combination with certain materials like suede or linen, the cotton-suede blend offers more grip on the shoulder. In contrast to models made of polyester or nylon, these are synthetic materials that are often smooth. Your bass could slide around on your shoulders. But these types of straps often offer the best value for money.

If you have a higher budget, the leather strap is the ultimate choice. It is an extremely durable material. There are different types such as cowhide, camel leather, etc. Choose the leather model that has a rough surface. It fits perfectly to your shoulder, even for rockers who like to take off their tops. And it combines comfort with versatility.

Choosing the right bass strap

The right fastening system to prefer

One always refers to the type of fastening and the safety of your guitar. Over time and with wear, the bass strap can suddenly fall off in the middle of a concert. This can cause discomfort and, above all, accidents, even damaging your bass guitar. Strap models with a locking system are highly sought after in this case.

Some manufacturers have developed security systems like straplocks. This is a strap clip with a safety latch that locks into place to secure the strap to the bass guitar. This is a very effective and safe solution. But it might not appeal to everyone. It is necessary to change the entire fastening system on your electric bass. Sometimes it is necessary to hire professionals for the change. This leads to additional costs.

There are also other alternatives like Strap Blocks. This is just a rubber ring that attaches to the strap buttons. These will certainly block the strap.

Why is it important to have a more aesthetic strap?

From a simple cotton strap to leather models, the aesthetic choice is much wider. The bassist can therefore choose the look of the strap according to their needs. They can use a strap that matches the rest of their outfit. A hard rocker is more likely to choose a strap with a mystical pattern. The leather strap can be adorned with eyelets. Some prefer vintage models with floral, Aztec, or many other patterns.

Indeed, the design possibilities for the strap are almost endless. It should, in a way, respect the artist’s musical style. But that doesn’t stop some from opting for somewhat divergent or extravagant styles.
