Choosing the right pick – which is recommended even for beginners on the classical guitar – depends on:

1. The speed of your play:for playing chords,choose a not too thick pick and for playing a solo or playing very fast,you will need a thicker pick.

2. Whether you play acoustic or electric guitar

3. Whether you want to achieve a precise and dynamic sound or rather a flexibility of play. Thus the thicker the pick,the more control we have. The thinner the pick,the more tolerance and a rather muffled sound,even when playing loud.

Thus the thickness and the material determine the pick’s ability to deform when in contact with the strings:for playing chords,choose a medium pick (around 0.80 mm).

This is the basic model,comfortable for most guitarists. To play very fast in solo,choose a thicker pick. Flexible picks are between 0.60 and 0.80 mm,the extra flexible,0.40 mm,the hard 1 mm and the extra hard from 1.14 mm. For materials,choose more or less flexible plastics:for example celluloid is flexible,tortex is very hard. Metal gives a… metallic sound to your play! Bone gives a warm sound. As for wood,it depends on the hardness of the species.

If finger play is more suited to the classical or folk style – and therefore we favor the pick to interpret rock or metal,the pick allows to more easily reproduce guitar solos,but also to play the rhythmic parts by obtaining a precise sound.

The size or shape of the pick is more a matter of personal convenience. To start,it’s good to test several shapes:small,large,rounded or triangular. The more pointed shapes allow a more frank and precise attack.
