How to Play the Xun Flute?

Learning the Xun is a rewarding journey.

Here are the basics to get started:

  1. Producing the Sound: This is the most important step. Hold the Xun vertically, place the upper opening (the “吹口” or breath hole) against your lower lip. Tilt the flute about 45 degrees and blow a thin, constant stream of air over the hole, much like blowing into the neck of a bottle. Experiment with the angle and force of your breath until you get a clear, stable sound.
  2. Holding the Instrument: The grip is intuitive. Place your thumbs on the two holes located on the back of the flute. Use the pads of your fingers (not the tips) to cover the eight holes on the front, as shown in the tablature. Your hands should gently wrap around the instrument to properly seal the holes.
  3. Playing the Notes: The tablature provided in the images shows you how to play a scale. A black dot (●) means the hole should be covered by your finger, a white circle (○) means it should be left open. By following these combinations, you can play your first melodies. Start with the lowest note (all holes covered) and go up the scale by opening the holes one by one.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the difference between F (F) and E (E) tuning? Which one to choose?

A: The difference is the fundamental pitch of the instrument. The flute in F (F) will have a slightly sharper sound than the one in E (E). For a beginner, the difference is minimal and the choice mainly depends on personal preference. Both tunings are excellent for starting learning.

Q: Why is this model made of resin and not traditional ceramic?

A: Resin was specifically chosen for beginners. It offers three major advantages: it is extremely strong and will not break in case of a fall, it is very light, which makes it easy to handle for children, and it is easy to clean. It’s the ideal material to learn without stress.

Q: Is it difficult to produce a sound at the beginning?

A: As with any flute without a mouthpiece, it takes a little time to find the right “embouchure”. The key is not to blow into the hole, but over it. Don’t get discouraged, after a few minutes of experimentation, most people find the correct angle and produce a clear sound.

Q: What exactly does the package contain?

A: Each order contains your Ten-Hole Xun Flute in the tuning you have chosen (F or E), as well as a fabric storage pouch to protect it from dust and scratches.
